Ear Wax Removal

The Story
That blocked, muffled feeling isn’t going away on its own.
There's a better option than drops, cotton buds, or another uncomfortable syringing session.
You've been dealing with that muffled feeling for weeks now. The TV's getting louder. You're asking people to repeat themselves more often than you'd like to admit. You've tried the drops from the chemist — maybe even cotton buds, even though you know you shouldn't. Nothing's really worked. Now you're worried you've pushed the wax deeper.
Or maybe you've had your ears syringed at the GP before: water pressure, discomfort, the mess afterward. It worked, but you're not eager to repeat the experience.
Microsuction is different. Gentle suction under magnification to see exactly what we're doing. No water. No pressure. No guesswork.

Why We Use Microsuction
Microsuction is the gold standard for ear wax removal and the safest method available. Instead of flushing your ear canal with water (traditional syringing), we use gentle suction under magnification to remove wax precisely. We can see exactly what we’re doing throughout the entire procedure.
| Microsuction | Syringing |
|---|---|
| Dry procedure, no water | Water pressure into ear canal |
| We can see exactly what we're doing | Often done without direct vision |
| Suitable for most patients, including those with perforated eardrums | Not suitable for perforated eardrums or grommets |
| Usually comfortable, minimal sensation | Can be uncomfortable, causes dizziness in some |
| No mess | Water everywhere |

What to Expect
Your Ear Wax Removal appointment
Duration: Approximately 30 minutes
Cost: $135 for both ears
Examination first
We look in your ears before we do anything. If there's no significant wax, or if we see something that needs medical attention (infection, perforation, foreign object), we'll tell you and advise on next steps. You only pay if we proceed with removal.
Tympanometry
A quick, painless test to check middle ear and eardrum function. Included at no extra cost.
Microsuction removal
Gentle suction performed by a qualified Clinican under magnification. You'll hear some noise (the suction device), but the procedure is usually comfortable. Takes up to 30 minutes depending on the amount of wax.
Post-removal check
We confirm your ear canal is clear, check your eardrum is healthy, and ensure there are no issues requiring follow-up.
Hearing check
If you mention you've been struggling to hear, we can discuss a comprehensive hearing assessment (separate appointment, $150)

FAQs
Frequently asked questions
$135 for professional microsuction ear wax removal, including a comprehensive ear examination, wax removal under magnified vision, and a post-removal check to confirm clear ear canals. If examination reveals no significant wax, a reduced consultation fee of 50% applies. You still receive a professional ear assessment and clear advice about your ear health. Home visits are available for an additional $150 travel fee within the Sydney area.
No referral required. You can book directly online or call any of our 4 Sydney locations: Darlinghurst, Bondi Junction, Kogarah, or St Leonards. Ear wax removal doesn’t have a Medicare item number, so a GP referral won’t change anything about the cost or process.
Most patients describe it as odd-feeling rather than painful. You’ll hear the suction device (it sounds louder than it is, because it’s close to your eardrum) and may feel a slight tickling sensation. There’s no water pressure, no dizziness, and none of the mess associated with traditional syringing. If you experience any discomfort, tell us and we’ll stop immediately.
Approximately 30 minutes. More complex cases with significant buildup or very hard wax may take a little longer.
No. Ear wax removal isn’t a Medicare item number, so bulk billing isn’t available regardless of whether you have a referral. Some private health funds may provide a rebate under extras cover, so it’s worth checking with your provider. DVA cardholders and NDIS participants should contact us directly to discuss their entitlements.
In most cases, yes. If wax was blocking your ear canal, you’ll notice the difference as soon as it’s cleared. If your hearing doesn’t improve after removal, the wax wasn’t the cause, and we’ll discuss next steps, including whether a comprehensive hearing assessment is the right move.
