Bone Anchored (BAHA)

Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA) Sydney
When a Hearing Aid Can’t Help, Sound Can Still Get Through
Standard hearing aids work through your ear canal. But if your canal is blocked, absent, or damaged, there's nothing to amplify through.
A bone anchored hearing aid (BAHA) takes a completely different route: it sends sound vibrations directly through your skull to the inner ear, bypassing the problem entirely.
Precision Hearing has been assessing and fitting BAHA systems in Sydney since 1999. We work with Cochlear, Oticon Medical, and Med-EL, and we offer the full clinical pathway: assessment, softband trial, ENT referral, post-surgical fitting, and lifetime follow-up.

BAHA Candidacy
Is BAHA Right for You?
BAHA is designed for people whose cochlea (inner ear) is healthy, but where sound can’t reach it through the normal pathway. The main candidates are:
- Conductive hearing loss: middle ear problems, chronic infections, or a damaged eardrum blocking sound.
- Mixed hearing loss: a combination of middle ear and inner ear damage.
- Single-sided deafness: significant loss in one ear that conventional hearing aids can’t address.
- Ear canal abnormalities: absent or malformed canals (atresia, stenosis) where a hearing aid can’t be worn.
Not sure if you qualify? The assessment will tell you definitively.

Trial Process
You’ll Experience the Benefit Before We Ever Mention Surgery
We don’t refer patients to a surgeon until they’ve heard the difference themselves. Here’s how it works:
Comprehensive Assessment
We assess your hearing profile, ear anatomy, and medical history to confirm whether BAHA is appropriate for you. ($300, Medicare rebate may apply with GP referral)
In-Clinic Softband Trial (included in assessment fee)
You trial the BAHA on a softband during your appointment. You hear the difference immediately. We measure it.
Take-Home Trial
Take the softband device home and experience BAHA in your real environment: work, home, restaurants, TV. Then decide. (up to 2 weeks, $150 of total $300)
Your Decision
Want to proceed with surgery? We coordinate the ENT referral. Prefer to stick with the non-surgical softband option? That's completely valid too. No pressure, no rush.
Lifetime Support, Bulk Billed
All BAHA Follow-Up at Precision Hearing Is Bulk Billed for Life
Once your implant has healed and we fit your external processor, every programming appointment, fine-tuning session, annual check-up, and software update is bulk billed. No ongoing costs for clinical care. We’ve been following BAHA patients for nearly 3 decades. You won’t be handed off to someone new at each visit.

FAQs
Frequently asked questions
BAHA surgery is a minor outpatient procedure. Most patients go home the same day. The implant integrates with the bone over 6 to 12 weeks, after which we fit the processor. Your ENT surgeon will walk you through the specifics.
The assessment is $300 (Medicare rebate may be available with a GP referral). Once you’ve had surgery, all programming and follow-up appointments at Precision Hearing are bulk billed, no ongoing cost for clinical care.
The device itself is covered by most private health funds with Silver Hospital Cover or above. Public patients can access surgery through the public hospital system at no cost.
The non-surgical softband is a legitimate long-term option, particularly for children or patients who prefer to avoid surgery. We’ll support you either way with ongoing adjustments and programming.
For a detailed comparison of BAHA systems (Cochlear Osia 2, Baha 7, Oticon Medical Sentio and Ponto, Med-EL BoneBridge), health fund coverage details, and surgical pathway information, see our BAHA Guide in Resources.
