Why Your Hearing Aids Didn't Work (And What to Do About It)

“I tried hearing aids once. They sat in a drawer.”

It’s one of the most common things audiologists / audiometrists hear. And it’s frustrating, because for the person who gave up, it reinforces the idea that hearing aids just don’t work, when the truth is usually more specific than that.

There are a handful of reasons why hearing aids fail, and most of them are fixable.

The most common reasons hearing aids end up in a drawer

  1. They weren’t fitted properly

Hearing aids don’t work straight out of the box. The programming must match your specific audiogram, and the fit of the ear piece or dome must seal correctly for the sound to reach your ear canal without feedback.

The gold standard for verifying a fitting is Real Ear Measurement (REM): a probe microphone placed in your ear canal measures the actual sound being delivered, confirming it matches what your audiogram requires. Without REM, the programming is essentially an educated guess.

Many retail fittings skip this step. At Precision Hearing, Real Ear Measurement is part of every hearing aid fitting.

  1. The adjustment period wasn’t supported

Adapting to hearing aids takes 2-4 weeks for most people. Your brain has often been missing sounds for years, and suddenly reintroducing them requires neurological adjustment. That process can feel uncomfortable or even overwhelming at first.

Patients who receive structured support during this period, with scheduled follow-ups at week 1, 2, and 3-4, succeed at much higher rates than those who are fitted and sent away. If you gave up in week 2 without guidance, the hearing aids probably weren’t the problem.

  1. The wrong devices were recommended

Hearing aid technology varies significantly across different price points and from different manufacturers. A device that works well in quiet environments may perform poorly in noise. A style suited to one type of hearing loss may not suit another.

Clinics tied to one or two manufacturers can only offer what they stock. Precision Hearing is an independent clinic with access to all major brands, which means recommendations are based on what suits your hearing loss and lifestyle, not what’s available on the shelf.

  1. Expectations weren’t set honestly

Hearing aids improve hearing. They don’t restore it to what it was at 20. In complex listening environments, background noise remains difficult even with premium devices.

Patients who are given an accurate picture of what hearing aids will and won’t do adapt much better than those who expect perfect hearing and are disappointed when restaurants still feel noisy. Honest expectation-setting at fitting is a clinical responsibility, not a nice-to-have.

  1. There wasn’t enough follow-up care

Most retail hearing clinics offer 60-90 days of aftercare. That’s often not enough. Hearing adjusts and changes, situations arise that weren’t anticipated at fitting, and fine-tuning is frequently needed months into wearing.

Precision Hearing includes 12 months of unlimited follow-up appointments with every hearing aid purchase. It’s the single most significant difference between how we do things and how most of the industry operates.

What to do if you’ve had a bad experience with hearing aids

Start with a fresh, independent assessment. It gives you an accurate, up-to-date audiogram and an honest conversation about what’s changed since your last test and what technology has improved in the meantime.

If you tried hearing aids more than 3 years ago, the technology is also genuinely different now. Wireless connectivity, AI-driven noise reduction, and rechargeable devices have changed significantly, even in the past few years.

Coming in with a negative prior experience is actually useful. A good audiologist / audiometrist will want to understand exactly what went wrong before making any recommendations.
