Is Microsuction Safe? What You Need to Know

Yes. Microsuction is considered the gold standard for ear wax removal by ENT specialists and audiologists. It’s the safest method available.

Why it’s safer than ear syringing

With microsuction, we can see exactly what we’re doing throughout the entire procedure using magnified vision. There’s no water pressure, which means no risk of pushing water or infection deeper into the ear. We control suction strength and can stop instantly if needed.

There’s no water introduced into the ear canal, which significantly reduces infection risk. And unlike syringing, which commonly causes dizziness from water temperature changes, microsuction doesn’t.

It’s also suitable for sensitive ears, including patients with grommets and some post-surgery ears.

Possible risks (rare)

Minor ear canal abrasion can occur if wax is extremely hard, but this heals quickly. Some patients experience temporary noise sensitivity from the suction device. Eardrum perforation is very rare and occurs in fewer than 1 in 1,000 procedures when performed correctly.

How it compares to other methods

Microsuction is significantly safer than cotton buds (which push wax deeper and risk perforation), ear candling (ineffective and dangerous), DIY irrigation at home (risk of perforation and infection), and traditional syringing (water pressure, infection risk, dizziness).

We follow strict safety protocols and will stop immediately if we encounter any issues or if you’re uncomfortable.
