Ear Wax Removal for Children: What Parents Need to Know

cochlear implants hearing aids sydney

Yes, we see children aged 12 years and older for microsuction ear wax removal.

What your child needs to be able to do

Microsuction requires the patient to remain still throughout the procedure. Your child needs to be able to sit still for 30 minutes, tolerate the sound of the suction device (which is loud because it’s close to the eardrum, but not harmful), and approach the procedure without significant anxiety.

When we’d recommend a specialist instead

If your child gets very anxious about medical procedures, has difficulty sitting still, is sensitive to noise, or is under 12 years old, we’d recommend seeing a paediatric ENT specialist. They have specialised equipment and techniques for younger or anxious children, and can provide sedation if necessary.

What to expect at the appointment

A parent or guardian must be present throughout. We explain the procedure in age-appropriate language beforehand. Most children tolerate microsuction well, especially if wax has been softened with olive oil drops for 3 to 5 days before the appointment. The appointment takes approximately 30 minutes.

The fee is the same as for adults: $135.

Please mention your child’s age when booking and let us know if they have any anxiety concerns. We’ll help you work out whether we’re the right fit.
